Getting Started with 3D Printing - A Quick Guide

I often get asked by parents and friends for 3D printing recommendations, especially when their kids are showing interest. Here's my opinionated but concise starting point for anyone looking to get into the hobby.
Highly recommend Bambu Labs for 3d printing. The software comes with Mac/Windows apps as well as iOS and Android. Bambu printers integrate directly with Makerworld for one-click printing. Bambu Lab printers can be found directly on their site or at a local Micro Center
Recommended Printers
Kids and Beginners ($200-400)
Usually can be found on sale for around $200 USD. Reliable and easy to use. Comes with sample filament and test prints to get started immediately.
Teen and Adults ($500-900)
Enclosed printer for more advanced materials and larger prints.
High End / Enthusiasts ($2000+)
Top of the line printers, largest print volumes, sensors and materials.
Filament
Filament is the plastic material used to print with. Filament comes in a variety of colors and types of plastics with varying levels of strength and rigidity. Its important to be aware certain plastics require additional safety measures.
- Filament can be purchased around $20 USD on the Bambu website or Amazon. I recommend either the Bambu brand or Overture from Amazon.
- Beginners should stick with PLA filament as this is safer than more advanced plastics that require active ventilation systems such as ABS.
- Filaments should be stored in a cool dry area, with humidity no higher than 30%. High humidity will cause the filament to become brittle and fail during printing.
Safety and Support
3d printing takes practice and patience.
- Bambu Labs has a beginners online course to 3d printing https://bambulab.com/en/support/academy
- Bambu support has a support site full of resources on debugging issues: https://bambulab.com/en/support
- Do not print in an enclosed space or bedroom. 3d printing can vent gases or micro plastics. Print in an open well ventilated area.
- Do not leave printers unattended for extended periods. 3d printers run at very high temperatures when printing and can be a fire hazard similar to kitchen appliances.
Parents
- Bambu Labs apps and site are very easy to use and get started with finding 3d models via https://makerworld.com/. However, the model content on the site does not restrict content or have parental controls, so be aware and attentive when kids are browsing models online.
